- David Nicholls wrote the screenplay for this version of Great Expectations, one of Dickens’s less adapted works. Read aloud, Great Expectations would last about 18 hours, so the challenge of adaptation is to cut that down to just two. Done successfully however Nicholls argues ‘an adaptation leads the cinema-goer to the original to find out what they're missing and if they already know the book, it can still illuminate a theme, a character, an idea’.
