- Walking sticks in Dickens's time were essential fashion accessories for gentlemen. This walking stick, a type called a 'Penang Lawyer', is made from an East Asian palm. It was given to Dickens by his friend, the adventurer and mountaineer Albert Smith. In addition to popularising mountaineering in Victorian Britain, Smith also helped organise Dickens's first public readings which became an international sensation.
