Brief description
Ceramic and fabric decorative pin cushion of Mr. Pickwick, about 1900
Label
A pin cushion is any padding or stuffed fabric that can be used to safety store pins and needles by poking them with the sharp tips. During and after Dickens's lifetime it was fashionable to make 'half-dolls' which were attached to pin cushions as decoration. This doll, one of a set of five, depicts Mr Pickwick, the titular hero of Dickens's first novel, The Pickwick Papers.
