Brief description
Watercolour illustration 'The Happy Pair' for 'Our Mutual Friend' by Marcus Stone
Label
Marcus Stone was the son of Dickens's friend and illustrator Frank Stone. When Frank died suddenly in 1859, Dickens treated Marcus like a son, welcomed him into his home, and hired him as an illustrator for Our Mutual Friend. Dickens allowed Marcus a large amount of freedom in selecting which scenes to illustrate. F G Kitton, an illustrator and founding member of the Dickens Fellowship, said "in no instance did the novelist question the proprierty of his (Marcus's) selection".
