Brief description: Satirical cartoon of Charles Dickens from 'Mephystopheles', 1845
Label: In 1846 Dickens founded a daily newspaper called The Daily News. Although Dickens resigned the editorship after only 17 issues, it would succeed and continue until 1930. The short-lived magazine Mephystopheles depicted Dickens as a jackdaw disguised among peacocks ('real' newspapers like The Times) and nicknamed Daily News the 'Daily Nuisance'. It is unclear when this was published - there are few records about the Mephystopheles's publication. Someone has written 1845 in pencil on the page. The Daily News launched in January 1846 and possibly advertised its launch in late 1845. This magazine could have been published just before or after the launch.
