- Brief description
- Silver plated goblet presented to Charles Dickens by the staff of the Morning Chronicle, 1837
- Label
- This silver goblet was a leaving gift to Dickens from the staff of The Morning Chronicle, which he left in 1837 to become editor of the magazine Bentley's Miscellany. Dickens started at the Chronicle in 1834 as a parliamentary reporter. Shortly before he left, Dickens led his fellow journalists in opposing changes made to their employment contracts by the newspaper's unlikeable owner, John Easthope (whom Dickens nicknamed 'blast-hope'). Perhaps that incident was why they gifted Dickens this goblet, which he treasured for decades until his death in 1870.
