- John Leech, a caricaturist known for his work in the satirical magazine Punch, was the first to illustrate Dickens’s first Christmas book, A Christmas Carol. These preparatory pencil sketches of ‘Marley's Ghost’, ‘Scrooge's Third Visitor’ and ‘The Last of the Spirits’ are almost identical to the end results which featured in the 1843 first edition.
