- Silver candle-snuffers owned by Charles Dickens

- There are two tools commonly called 'snuffers'. The first is a cone placed over the candle's wick to extinguish it. The second, also called a 'wick trimmer', are scissors like these used by Dickens at his home in Gad's Hill Place. These cut the 'snuff' - the burnt tip of the wick - without extinguishing the candle (the burnt bit would be caught by the box on the scissor-blade). Modern candle-wicks burn away, which is why we no longer use these. After Dickens died in 1870, these were kept by his servant Ann Brown.
