- Original chalk drawing by Charles Pears for the 1912 Waverley Edition of The Mystery of Edwin Drood, Dickens’s last and unfinished novel. It depicts the character John Jasper reclining on a bed smoking an opium pipe (which he was addicted to). Jasper has long been suspected of murdering Drood, but we will never know what Dickens planned. Pears was an official naval War Artist during both World Wars and made posters for London Underground.
