Object name (per part)

Production person

Maclise, Daniel

Production date

A full length portrait of Catherine Dickens in her 30s, wearing a blue dress with flowers at the chest, leaning against the base of a column, with a roughly painted landscape in the background. In comparison to Daniel Maclise's painting from the following year, it is lighter, brighter, more spontaneous and less finished. It is one of the archetypal images of Catherine, due to a photograph of this painting being published in Edward F. Payne's 'Dickens's Days in Boston', 1927. Her husband, Charles Dickens and Maclise were known to be close friends.
