Label: This painting of Catherine Dickens was painted by the artist Daniel Maclise around 1847 when she was in her early 30s. In the portrait Catherine is shown as a skilled sewer - she is stitching an overmantel (a decorative covering for a mantle over a fireplace) - but she was also fluent in French, could play the piano and was well-read. She is also wearing her engagement ring. The painting was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1848 and is one of two paintings of Catherine by Maclise in the Museum's collection.
