Brief description
Reproduction poster for The Mystery of Edwin Drood film (1935)
Label
There were two silent film adapdations of The Mystery of Edwin Drood in 1909 and 1914, but this 1935 American production was the first 'speakie' or film with sound which adapted the story. Dickens died before he finished Drood and so every adaptation had to come up with its own ending. In this version the murderer is John Jasper, Drood's opium-addicted uncle. Jasper is played by Claude Rains, who famously played Captain Renault in Casablanca. This poster is from the film's release in Sweden, where it was called Mysteriet Edvin Drood.
