Brief description
Playbill for 'Sam Weller's Tour! Or The Pickwickians In France', New Strand Theatre, 2 July 1838
Label
This comedy by William Thomas Moncrieff was one of several plagiarised adaptions of the Pickwick Papers put to stage before the novel was even finished. Dickens complained and Moncrieff added an apology to the author in later playbills. The Moncrieff adaption ran for 80 performances, partly because of the popularity of actor and director William John Hammond’s portrayal of Sam Weller.
