Playbill for 'A Christmas Carol', Theatre Royal Adelphi, 1844

Object number (per part)

DH789, 2019.5.210

Object name (per part)

Production date

By February 1844 A Christmas Carol had already been adapted for the stage 8 times. This playbill however is for the only dramatic production sanctioned by Dickens. The play was performed at the Theatre Royal, Adelphi, and was adapted by the playwright Edward Stirling. In his memoirs, Stirling recorded that Dickens attended several rehearsals and made ‘valuable suggestions.’ From his letters we know that Dickens went to see the performance but had mixed opinions on the show.
