- Brief description
- Playbill for 'A Christmas Carol', Theatre Royal Adelphi, 1844
- Label
- By February 1844, A Christmas Carol had already been adapted for the stage eight times. This playbill is for the only version which was "sanctioned" (approved) by Dickens. It was performed at the Theatre Royal, Adelphi, and was adapted by the playwright Edward Stirling. In his memoirs, Stirling recorded that Dickens attended several rehearsals and made "valuable suggestions." From his letters we know that Dickens went to see the performance but had mixed opinions on the show.
