- A portrait of Wilkins Micawber from ‘David Copperfield’. Micawber was Copperfield’s optimistic but money-foolish landlord. Micawber serves himself punch from a bowl on the table – both the character and Dickens himself enjoyed punch. We see Micawber characteristically cheerful, enjoying things he cannot afford. The character was inspired by Dickens’s own father, John, was sent to Marshalsea Prison for unpaid debts.
