- Brief description
- Family Bible of the Dickens family
- Label
- This leather-bound Bible belonged to Dickens's parents, John and Elizabeth, in 1835. Inside has been pasted an obituary for John, who died in 1851 at age 66. Dickens's parents were Anglicans - belonging to the Church of England - but there is little to suggest they were devout or active churchgoers, especially considering how often they moved parish for John's work or to escape John's many debts. Dickens himself had a deep Christian faith but did not seem to belong to any particular group or doctrine. He wrote a simplified version of the gospels for his children (which was later published in 1934 under the name The Life of Our Lord).
